Choose the contact record

Identify whether the sign-in user, client billing identity or an additional contact needs updating. Verify the intended recipient afterwards.

A sign-in user, client billing record and additional contacts may hold different addresses and notice permissions. In the verified portal, decide which messages must move—login, invoice, service or legal notices—and update that record.

Before changing an address, ensure the replacement mailbox is under your control and can receive messages. If you have lost access to the current address or suspect account compromise, use the provider’s identity-verified support process rather than asking someone to bypass verification in a ticket.

Map the current recipients

Review Account Details, Your Profile and any Contacts or Users view that your client area exposes. WHMCS documents separate user and client details, and they may need separate saves. Record which address currently receives invoices, support replies and security messages. Check any contact-specific email preferences or role permissions before removing an old contact; a person who handles billing may differ from the person who can manage services.

If you manage a company account, confirm you are authorised to alter the client’s billing identity. Avoid replacing the main account with a shared mailbox solely to give several staff access. Where separate user invitations and roles are enabled, assign individual access and appropriate permissions instead.

Make one controlled update at a time

Update the relevant profile or client-detail field through the available account interface, save, and follow any verification link or confirmation step that is actually requested. Then update other relevant client/contact records separately if necessary. Check the final displayed values after a fresh sign-in. Do not assume an edit to Your Profile synchronises Account Details.

For an email-address change, keep access to the old mailbox during verification if possible. If the client area blocks the field or needs support approval, ask the provider for its authorised change process. Never include passwords, full payment-card data or identity documents in an ordinary unsecured message unless the provider supplies a specific secure channel.

Test the notices that matter

Use a low-risk account notification or ask support to confirm the notification routing without creating a duplicate invoice. Verify that the intended person receives a test or subsequent legitimate message, and check spam filtering or forwarding where relevant. Review the permissions and recipients of additional contacts so invoices and operational alerts do not silently go to an obsolete address. If you changed a login address, sign out and back in with the new identity only after the change is confirmed.

If notices stop arriving, restore a still-authorised address in the relevant field or contact the provider through its verified support route. Supply the account identifier and redacted old/new addresses, not credentials. Maintain a record of when the change was submitted and confirmed.

Illustrative result: if sign-in notices reach the new user address but invoices still reach the old billing contact, inspect the client and contact records before changing anything else.

A successful profile save does not prove invoice or security notices now reach the intended person; confirm each recipient route.

Common questions

Why do invoices still go to the old address? The client billing email or a contact preference may be separate from the login profile.

Can one account have several users? WHMCS supports user and client relationships; availability and roles depend on the provider configuration.

What if I cannot access the old mailbox? Ask the provider to verify account authority and process the change securely.
