Understand domain expiry versus hosting suspension

Compare domain registration, DNS resolution and hosting service state to repair the cause of an outage.

Treat the domain and hosting as separate services

Check registration, DNS and hosting status separately to identify which service is causing the outage.

Registration expiry, failed DNS delegation, hosting suspension and an application fault can all interrupt a website. Compare the actual registrar, authoritative DNS and hosting service states before paying an invoice or changing records. Each cause has a different recovery owner.

Note the exact hostname, time of first failure and browser or mail error. Do not conclude “expired” from a browser message or “suspended” from a single control-panel banner without checking the actual record owner.

Check registration and DNS evidence

At the registrar or a trustworthy registration-data source, inspect the domain’s current status and expiry, then compare it with the client-area domain record. WHMCS has statuses such as Active, Grace Period, Redemption Period and Expired, but the registrar’s effective state and TLD rules determine what actions remain available. Query current delegation and authoritative DNS answers. If the registration is active but delegation returns SERVFAIL, the problem may be nameservers or DNSSEC rather than expiry.

An expired domain may stop resolving or be redirected by the registrar, but behaviour varies. If the domain is in grace or redemption, contact the registrar promptly for the exact renewal route and charges. Do not assume a normal renewal is still possible.

Check the independent hosting record

Open the exact hosting service record in the verified client portal and read its status, due date and related notices. A Suspended service may require provider action for non-payment, an incident or policy reason; an Active record does not guarantee the web server or application is healthy. If you still have a provider-supplied preview or direct host test, ask the operator to verify the site without changing public DNS. Do not bypass a suspension by changing nameservers.

If both domain and hosting seem active, use DNS-authority, TLS, web-server and application diagnostics according to the actual error. Check that the domain points to the intended service and that its certificate covers the hostname.

Repair the service that failed

For registration expiry, use the registrar’s supported recovery process and verify the new registry term. For hosting suspension, follow the provider’s billing or support process and request confirmation of unsuspension; a paid invoice may need reconciliation. For DNS failure, repair at the authoritative provider with a saved previous state. Keep evidence and avoid parallel speculative changes to domain and hosting settings.

If registration and authoritative DNS are healthy but the hosting account shows Suspended, follow the hosting provider's recovery route; another A-record change will not clear the service state.

After resolution, confirm public DNS, HTTPS, the application and inbound mail if domain availability affected it. Record when each service recovered; cached DNS or registrar responses may persist. If the cause remains unclear, send the provider domain, service identifier, statuses, relevant dates and redacted errors, not credentials.

Common questions

Can hosting be active while a domain is expired? Yes. Their lifecycles are separate.

Will a domain renewal unsuspend hosting? No, unless the provider separately resolves the hosting state.

Does a DNS error prove expiry? No. Check registration and DNS authority separately.

Does restored DNS prove the website is healthy? No. Check HTTPS and the application after resolving registration or service state.
