Renew a domain before it lapses

Renew through the verified domain provider and confirm that registrar or registry records show the completed term.

Find the actual renewal owner and deadline

Renew through the verified registrar or reseller route early, then confirm the registration term actually advanced.

Domain registration and hosting can have different providers, bills and deadlines. Check the exact domain’s registrar, status, effective expiry and payment route before renewing. A client-area date can lag the registrar; verify the registration result after payment.

Renewal options, restrictions and grace periods vary by TLD, registrar and contract. Do not wait for the final day or assume that paying a hosting invoice renews the domain. Confirm the authorised domain holder can receive registrar notices.

Review automatic and manual routes

In the verified domain-management account, inspect whether Auto Renew is enabled, the payment method and any unpaid renewal invoice. In WHMCS, a displayed domain Auto Renewal setting can control generation of a renewal invoice; that is distinct from a registrar’s own auto-renewal mechanism. It is not proof that payment has succeeded or the registrar has extended the term. Client renewal options and subsequent registrar actions depend on the TLD, integration and provider configuration.

Check that the registration is eligible for renewal and that sufficient time remains for billing and registrar processing. If a transfer is pending, ask both providers which event can proceed first. If the domain is already in grace or redemption, stop using an ordinary “before expiry” process and ask the registrar for the status, fee and permitted recovery route.

Submit one authorised renewal

If a manual renewal control is available, select the exact domain and term, read the displayed price and terms, and submit once. If renewal is invoice-driven, pay the correct domain renewal invoice through the verified provider route and keep the payment reference. Do not duplicate a renewal because the client-area date has not immediately changed. If no customer action is visible, ask the registrar or reseller for its supported process and a written deadline.

Keep the registration contact address current. A successful payment receipt and a submitted order are intermediate evidence, not final registrar confirmation. Do not change nameservers merely to renew a domain.

Confirm the registrar extended the term

Check the provider’s renewal confirmation and the registrar or registry-backed expiry after processing. Compare the domain status and new expiry with the term purchased, allowing for any registry-specific rules the registrar explains. Verify the domain still resolves and the existing nameserver delegation remains intended. A new WHMCS next due date alone does not prove the registry term was extended.

For a one-year renewal, expect the registrar's effective registration date to advance according to its TLD rules; if only the billing due date changed, ask the registrar for transaction status.

If the transaction fails or the expiry does not advance, contact the registrar promptly with the domain, order/payment reference, timestamps and displayed status. Ask whether a pending action must be completed; do not pay again until duplicate-charge risk is assessed. Preserve the old confirmation and escalate before the actual expiry.

Common questions

Does Auto Renew guarantee renewal? No. Payment, eligibility and registrar processing must succeed.

Can I renew hosting instead? Hosting and domain registration are separate items.

Why do dates differ? Billing and registry dates can represent different events; verify with the registrar.

Does a successful payment prove renewal? No. Confirm the registrar's completed registration state and new term.
