Why the invoice still shows the previous method
In WHMCS, changing your client account’s default payment method does not change the method already assigned to an existing unpaid invoice. For a new automatic recurring payment, WHMCS normally tries the client default when it is applicable. If it is not valid for that invoice or gateway, WHMCS may use the client’s first applicable saved method instead. An invoice that has already been created keeps its own assigned payment method.
That is why an invoice can still show an older card, bank method or gateway after you update the default. Check the invoice itself before paying: changing the default again or deleting a saved method may not correct that invoice.
Check the specific unpaid invoice first
- Open the Novasean client area from a trusted bookmark or by navigating from novasean.com.
- Open the exact invoice and confirm its number, status, currency, amount and due date.
- If the invoice is unpaid, look for the payment options offered on that invoice. If a supported alternative is shown, select it there and follow the verified payment page.
- After payment, return to the invoice and confirm that its status changes. A bank or gateway receipt alone does not prove that the invoice has been reconciled.
Available options depend on the configured payment gateway and the invoice. Do not assume every saved method can be used for every invoice.
Change the method used for future recurring attempts
If your client area provides payment-method management, open Billing → Payment Methods. Add the replacement method through the portal’s verified payment flow, then choose the option to make it the default if one is available. Reopen the list to confirm which method is marked as default.
WHMCS normally uses the client default for new automatic recurring payment attempts when it is applicable. If that method is not valid for a specific invoice or gateway, WHMCS may use the client’s first applicable saved method instead. It does not provide a separate default method for each service. Menu labels and available actions can vary with WHMCS version, gateway and provider configuration.
Updating a saved method’s description or expiry date is not the same as adding replacement card or bank details. Use only the gateway-supported update or add-method flow shown in your account; do not assume that changing one field updates an underlying payment token.
If you cannot select or add a payment method
A payment method can be missing because the gateway is not enabled for client use, the method is not applicable to that invoice, or the provider uses a separate hosted payment flow. WHMCS also allows a provider to control whether clients can remove saved methods. The client area may therefore offer fewer controls than a generic WHMCS guide shows.
Do not try to change another customer’s billing profile or use an administrative URL. If the expected option is absent, raise a billing request from the signed-in client area. Include the invoice number, the method displayed, the action you tried and any non-sensitive error text. Ask which payment route is available for that invoice.
If payment succeeded but the invoice remains unpaid
Do not submit a second payment while the first transaction may still be processing. Check the payment provider’s status and the invoice in your client area. If the invoice remains unpaid after the provider’s normal processing interval, ask billing to reconcile it using the invoice number, payment date and a transaction reference if requested.
Keep card numbers, security codes, bank credentials, one-time codes and full payment links out of support tickets and email. Share only the minimum transaction detail requested through a verified account channel.

Common questions
Will changing my default method update an invoice that is already unpaid? No. WHMCS says existing unpaid invoices keep their assigned payment method. Choose an available alternative on that invoice, if it is offered.
Can I set a different default for each service? WHMCS documents one default payment method for the client account, rather than a separate default per service. A provider may expose other invoice-level choices.
Does adding a payment method automatically pay an overdue invoice? Do not assume so. Check the invoice and its current status, then use a payment option shown for that invoice or ask billing for the correct next step.
Why does my screen not match these instructions? The portal theme, WHMCS version and active gateway affect the controls. Use the options present in your signed-in account and ask Novasean billing if you cannot identify the right action.
