Confirm the domain and the actual hold reason

Confirm the registrar's reason for clientHold and resolve it through that registrar; ordinary DNS edits cannot lift the hold.

For a customer-owned .com name showing clientHold after a contact-verification inquiry, confirm the notice in the authenticated registrar account. The hold prevents registry DNS activation, so web and mail can stop resolving. It can have other causes, including disputes or non-payment; do not assume the email inquiry explains it.

Sign in through the registrar’s known website or the verified domain client-area link, not a link in an unexpected message. Confirm the exact domain, current registrar, registration status and the notice or ticket explaining the hold. Compare the contact address shown in the authenticated account with the address the holder can actually receive. Do not publish private registration details in a support forum.

Complete the registrar's confirmed check

If the authenticated registrar record confirms a contact-data inquiry, have the authorised registrant follow its stated verification or correction process. ICANN’s guidance says an applicable registrar may suspend, terminate or lock a registration following non-response to a contact-data inquiry under the relevant accreditation rules. That is a registrar-controlled process; editing the domain’s A, MX or nameserver records cannot lift a registrar hold. If the verification mail cannot be received because the domain is held, ask the registrar for a secure alternative to prove control and update the contact route.

Do not buy the domain again, move hosting or initiate a transfer as a substitute for clearing the current status. For a domain with a different top-level domain, including .nl, follow its registrar and registry rules rather than assuming this .com/gTLD workflow applies.

Ask the registrar to review a persistent hold

After completing the requested check, look for confirmation in the authenticated account and ask the registrar to review or remove clientHold if it remains. Give the domain, notice reference, completion time and current status through the registrar’s verified support route. If the notice describes a different cause, resolve that cause with the registrar instead of repeating contact verification. Novasean can help within its contracted domain-service scope only when it is the responsible registrar or reseller route for that registration.

Verify delegation and each affected service

First confirm that the status no longer shows clientHold and that authoritative DNS delegation is available again. Then check the intended website hostname and any existing mail domain separately from an independent resolver or client. Caches may delay what individual users observe after the registry status changes, and the registrar controls timing; do not promise immediate restoration. If the hold has gone but one service is still broken, inspect its DNS and hosting path as a separate fault.

Once the registrar confirms removal of clientHold, look for restored parent delegation first, then test the website and an external mail route separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does clientHold always mean I missed a verification email? No. Confirm the registrar’s actual reason in its authenticated account.

Should I change my MX records to restore email? A DNS hold prevents the domain from resolving at the registry level; clear the hold with the registrar before diagnosing individual mail records.

If the hold is removed but mail still fails, should the registrar reopen verification? Check the restored delegation and mail route first; the remaining fault may be separate.
