Recover a WordPress critical error after a plugin update

Use WordPress Recovery Mode and logs to isolate a plugin-related critical error after an update.

Confirm the update and protect the current state

After a plugin update triggers a WordPress critical error, identify the named failure through Recovery Mode or logs before disabling one component.

The timing of a plugin update is a clue; the exact failing component still needs confirmation. The application owner should note the update time, plugin name and version, affected public and admin URLs, and any recent theme or PHP change. WordPress documents fatal errors from themes or custom code too. Keep a current account backup or application rollback artefact before changing another component.

Novasean hosting does not imply WordPress maintenance or plugin care. Use your site administrator and any file access granted for that exact account. If other sites or the hosting panel also fail, report those platform symptoms rather than assuming one plugin is responsible.

Use the administrator Recovery Mode link

Check the WordPress site administrator mailbox for a Recovery Mode message. WordPress sends a special link when it detects certain fatal PHP errors on a normal page load; delivery is not guaranteed. Treat the link as sensitive, check that it belongs to your real site, and do not paste it into a public forum or support ticket. Sign in through the link and read the dashboard notice naming the faulty component. Recovery Mode pauses that component for your administrative session, so your own working dashboard does not yet prove visitors see a repaired site.

If the notice identifies the updated plugin, the application owner can deactivate that plugin or restore its last known-good version using the plugin’s documented method and a retained backup. Check any functions that rely on it before resuming. Do not deactivate every plugin or switch PHP versions to test a single known update.

Use a targeted file route only if Recovery Mode is unavailable

If no recovery message arrives and an authorised file manager or transfer account is available, the application owner may temporarily rename only the identified plugin directory under the correct installation’s wp-content/plugins. WordPress documents this as a way to pause a suspected plugin. First confirm the actual WordPress root and retain the original directory name and a restorable copy. Renaming the entire plugins directory would affect unrelated features and is not the targeted step here. If the failing component is unknown or file access is absent, ask the application maintainer for a supported recovery route.

Test visitors and administration separately

Exit Recovery Mode after the targeted fix, then open the affected public page and admin login in fresh sessions. Confirm that the critical-error screen is gone, the intended plugin version is recorded and a dependent function still works. If the public page remains broken, restore the previous known-good application state or keep the named component paused while the owner investigates. Share safe error timing and component identity with support if a platform fault is suspected; keep recovery links, credentials and debug output private.

For example, disabling a named plugin in Recovery Mode and seeing the site load narrows the fault. Test the feature that plugin supplied and choose a compatible update or rollback before re-enabling it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Recovery Mode fix the plugin? No. It gives the administrator a way to enter the site and act on the failing component.

Why did no recovery email arrive? WordPress notes that mail delivery can fail, including when a mail plugin does not load before the fatal error. Use the authorised alternative route or ask the site owner for help.
